Screen Scene: Winslet’s Middle-earth Debut, Box Office Hoppers & Scream 7 Hype

Happy Friday the 13th, legends!

Yes, it is Friday, March 13th, 2026, and if you’re superstitious, you might be staying indoors today. Honestly? That’s probably the best move anyway, because there is an absolute mountain of movie news to catch up on. Here at Rock Universe, we’ve been glued to the trades all morning. From massive casting news in Middle-earth to box office records being shattered by Pixar and a certain masked slasher, the entertainment world is on fire right now.

Grab a coffee (or a potion, if you’re fancy), sit back, and let’s dive into this week’s Screen Scene roundup.

Return to Middle-earth: Kate Winslet Joins the Quest

If you thought the casting for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum couldn’t get any better, think again. The internet nearly broke this morning with the official confirmation that the one and only Kate Winslet has joined the cast.

Now, for those of you who know your film history, this is a massive full-circle moment. Kate’s big breakout happened back in 1994 with Heavenly Creatures, which was directed by some guy named Peter Jackson. You might have heard of him? Seeing them reunite for a project in Middle-earth is the kind of cinematic poetry we live for.

While her specific role is still being kept under tighter wraps than the One Ring in Bilbo’s pocket, we know she’s taking on a lead female role. She’ll be heading down to New Zealand (the only place Middle-earth truly exists, let's be real) to film from May through October of this year.

A lone traveler overlooks a misty New Zealand mountain range, evoking the epic scale of Middle-earth.

Directed by Andy Serkis, who is also reprising his legendary role as Gollum, the film is set in that juicy period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. It follows a young Aragorn on a high-stakes mission to find Gollum before Sauron’s forces do. We’ve already got Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen confirmed to return, so adding Winslet to the mix is basically like assembling the Avengers of prestige acting.

Pro-tip for the fans: With the hype for The Hunt for Gollum reaching fever pitch for its 2027 release, now is the time to check your gear. Whether you’re a Rider of Rohan or a humble Hobbit, showing your love for Tolkien’s world is a must. Check out our officially licensed Lord of the Rings merch at Rock Universe. From Map of Middle-earth hoodies to iconic Elven jewelry, we’ve got the official stuff that actually supports the creators. Don't settle for the knock-offs you find in Mordor (or sketchy third-party sites).

Scream 7: The Slasher That Won’t Quit

It’s Friday the 13th, so it’s only right that we talk about Ghostface. Scream 7 has been out for a little while now, and the box office numbers coming in this week are absolutely terrifying, in a good way.

Despite being the seventh entry in the franchise, fans are turning out in droves. The "Scream-naissance" is officially in full swing. There was a lot of drama behind the scenes during production, but the final product has clearly hit a nerve with both Gen Z and the original 90s fans. It’s witty, it’s meta, and it’s gorey as hell.

But it’s not just the horror fans winning this month. Pixar’s latest original, Hoppers, is also "hopping" over all expectations. It’s a bit of a weird one, in the best Pixar way possible, involving a girl who "hops" her consciousness into a robotic beaver to infiltrate the animal kingdom. It sounds wild, but it’s currently neck-and-neck with Scream 7 for the top spot. It just goes to show that whether we want to be scared out of our seats or moved to tears by an animated rodent, we’re all still heading to the cinema.

If you’re a horror buff, you know that Rock Universe is the home of the macabre. Our Scream and classic horror collections are stacked right now. If you want to rep Ghostface this weekend, make sure you’re wearing the official gear. It’s the only way to ensure we keep getting these sequels!

Sydney Sweeney’s New Empire

Is there anyone busier than Sydney Sweeney right now? The answer is a hard "no." Between her rom-com hits and her horror turns, she’s basically the busiest person in Hollywood. Her latest project, The Custom of the Country, just got some major casting updates.

Based on the Edith Wharton novel, this is going to be a massive period drama. Think Gossip Girl but with 19th-century stakes and way more corsets. Sweeney is set to play Undine Spragg, one of literature's most ambitious (and slightly terrifying) social climbers. Casting news this week suggests they’ve rounded out the ensemble with some heavy hitters from the UK drama scene, making this a must-watch for anyone who loves a bit of high-society drama.

Wuthering Heights: Emerald Fennell’s $200m Milestone

Speaking of period dramas, but with a much darker twist, let’s talk about Emerald Fennell. The director who gave us Saltburn and Promising Young Woman has done it again. Her adaptation of Wuthering Heights has officially crossed the $200 million mark at the international box office this week.

For an R-rated, gothic, moody literary adaptation, those numbers are insane. It proves that there is a massive appetite for bold, stylistic filmmaking. Fennell’s version of Heathcliff and Cathy is way more "rock and roll" than the versions you studied in school, and the 16-40 demographic is absolutely eating it up.

It’s gothic, it’s beautiful, and it’s tragic, basically the vibe of every cool person’s Pinterest board right now.

Why Official Merch is the Only Way to Go

You might see a lot of "fan-made" or "bootleg" stuff floating around social media, but here at Rock Universe, we’re big believers in the real deal. When you buy officially licensed merchandise: whether it's a Scream tee, a Lord of the Rings collectible, or a Star Wars hoodie: you’re doing more than just looking cool.

You’re directly supporting the studios, the artists, and the writers who create these worlds. In an era where streaming and box office numbers are everything, buying official gear is a vote for more of the stories you love. Plus, let’s be honest: the quality of the official stuff is just better. No one wants a Ghostface mask that melts in the sun or a Ring that turns your finger green.

What’s on Your Watchlist?

So, what are you hitting up this weekend? Are you going for a re-watch of Titanic in honor of the Winslet news? Are you heading to the cinema to see if Ghostface finally gets caught? Or maybe you’re just going to sit back in your favorite Rock Universe lounge gear and binge-watch the latest season of your favorite show.

Whatever you’re doing, keep it cinematic. We’ll be back next week with another roundup of everything happening in the world of movies and TV.

Stay legendary,

Craig Worsell Director, Rock Universe
